Midfielder was outstanding in the win and made everyone smile with one tackle on Sergio Ramos
Eric Dier is a much-maligned character.
But he won the love of a nation of football fans tonight in just one moment.
England became the first team to beat Spain in a competitive game on their own turf for 15 years with a 3-2 victory in the Nations League.
Two goals from Raheem Sterling and one from Marcus Rashford put the Three Lions in dreamland – 3-0 up at half-time.
And they survived a second half onslaught from the former World champions to secure all three points – their first of the competition.
And while the result and the three goals will be remembered for some time, the match will also be remembered for one other moment – Dier clattering Sergio Ramos.
Dier was imperious in the middle of the park, protecting his back four solidly. But the moment in the first half sent the Twitter world into meltdown.
Real Madrid defender Ramos, another player much-maligned, more for his character than his footballing ability, picked up the ball in his own 18-yard box, but could do nothing with it.
That is because Tottenham man Dier launched into him with a ferocious sliding tackle, winning the ball and dumping Ramos onto his backside in the process.
Rather controversially Dier was booked for the tackle, much to his chagrin, but the Twitter-sphere loved it.
Many called it “entirely unnecessary” but because it was on Ramos, it was deemed to be justified.
Here’s the best of the reaction to Dier’s tackle and performance.
